Vrabel Gurdies - new model update
It's been a long time since my last review of the Vrabel Hurdy Gurdy. Though I regret nothing, I now had the chance to try out one of his newest instruments. While some things stay the same, others have improved and it felt like it was a good chance to review the instrument again after loading 7 years of experience on my back.

How to play A Drop of Nelson's Blood on concertina (Tutorial)
Just as a little side note, this three-stringed style is known as a "Crwth Trithant." There's even some old pictures showing folks playing them. Funnily, most of the Trithant depictions I've found show them being played between the knees, or resting on the thigh, like you do here. The against the chest position seems to be more common with the 6 string version. I play mine with an "underhand" bow grip, palm facing more upward, with index and middle fingers adjusting the tension on the bow hair.
Hi there! I wanted to stop in and thank you for this review! It's what got me to check out Ars Anglia and buy a Crwth for myself! I took your advice and got the violin strings too! Matter of fact, I linked the maker this very video! I have done a bit of modification to it since the initial purchase (more traditonal bridge and cow horn tailpiece), and in talking to the maker, he's updated his design, but this was the spark that set me on my journey, so I just wanted to say thank you so much again for this video review!
Jimi Hellinga made a very interesting review about Vrabel Hurdy Gurdy ... You can get your own idea, but the wole idea is that it is not an instrument to buy ... even if you are a beginner. Here's the link (read the comments in the video description, there is his opinion in detail and it is not good): ruclips.net/video/5vZWxEIcRlk/видео.html
thanks!
Thank you for posting this.
Dang. Now I have to buy a concertina.
How do some of you get such a deep tone on your gurdy. I want to get one, but all the demos I hear are a high pitched, ear splitting bagpipe sound and I want something deeper and more like a bass.
Good question. First of all, I'm not using the "standard" G tuning, instead my strings in these video were in C4 ( or C3 / C4?). This would be an Alto tuning. Secondly, I'm passing the sound through a piezo and then to my Roland Cube with Octavizer effect (it replicates your sound one octave lower) for extra bass. The cone of the amp is very small, but still I can get much more bass than normal!
I used to have one. Paid $40 for it. That was a lot of money to me in '66. Sold it for the same amount to someone I hated, but I needed the money. Wish I had it back...might just buy another one.
You won't find them for 40$, but why not, it's a really relaxing instrument! Easy to learn, hard to master as they say
Love black sails and Hurdy Gurdy!
I'm gonna tell you.. YOU SUCK. Then i'm gonna go copy you and half ass it get paid instead of you because the way my ethnicity looks is trending.
✨🙏🏼 awesome ✨
How many strands did you use?
I think somewhere arounh 50/60 but hell I don't remember.
@@CaptainGurdyIm each string? I saw people making for example 30 strands for the two outer strings and about 60 in the middle. Im curious because Im making a Talharpa now and have completely no idea about instruments 😅. How long is your Talharpa? Mine is about 85cm long
Are 3 stringed talharpas better?

Very Good Video!
Super Fun & Great Lesson!! Thank You
I like how you changed the piece to get around the limitations your instrument (concertina) provided you with. I think the changes you made are very nice; you should be proud of this video. I personally know what it’s like to have limitations (lack of notes) on an instrument (I play traditional accordions -one 120 bass and one 12 bass accordion)- and I have trouble playing some pieces that use notes that are not on my accordion. All-in-all I think you did a superb job at modifying this piece to work on a concertina. I personally would give this video an 11/10 (an extra point for effort and uniqueness). Have an amazing day!
Thanks a lot! To be honest, I didn't think it, it just seemed the best way to do it.
Good shit! Though your intonation can be slightly tighter. Let me know if you need help tuning your keys :)
I'm fine thanks! With 4 Hurdy Gurdies at home, I struggle to keep up with the maintenance & tuning :|
I appreciate this so much!!!!! I get my first one on monday and omg this is the first song i want to learn! Can you show a slowed version of like which keys youre playing?❤
You can slow down the video on the youtube player if it helps. Also, I have posted "tabs" on the description of the video. It's not a known standard, so they may be hard to interpret, but should give you a hand. Let me know if you have any question!
I think your vrabel hurdy gurdy is a major disaster in your playing.......its like riding a donkey at the grand national,if your going to do a tutorial presentation I suggest you try s better quality hurdy gurdy ....!
which one are you?
@@CaptainGurdy my name is legion for we are many ?
@@lightningspirit2166Well first of thank you for comparing me playing th HG to me riding at the grand national. Donkeys are great animals, really trustworthy, so the comparison there is appreciated too. But seriously, I'm not that stupid. I'm a terrible concertina player, I have a 15€ Hohner concertina. Yet every time I post a song using that, I get only positive comments. I'm a shitty Saz player, I got my baglama for 50€ on ebay, again I get no bad comments when I shoot videos with it. Yet, every time I play something in the 600-700€ price range, I get a couple of comments, from 1 / 2 yr old accounts, who identify the name of the maker (even when I don't mention it) and insult either me directly or more often the maker. Every time the same charade. It doesn't take Einstein to understand that there is a very small number of people on the planet who would feel angered or threatened by my videos. Hence, my question.
@@CaptainGurdy hello......thanks for the reasonable reply......I've seen many of your u tube presentations ,where your hurdy gurdy playing is good....but i think the vrabel hurdy gurdy was the problem in this instance ....i have had a bad past experience buying from this maker, and I'm not the only one ....other u tube gurdy players have also pointed this out.....on their presentations....it really annoys me how this makers rubbish hurdys are sold to customers, who then lose out ! Nothing personal, your a victim too ,but at least you try to play well on a bad instrument .....however not with great success !regards.... ..
Very nice!
How can you claim to teach when you are playing out of tune, in the wrong key and with the drone clashing with the melody
you're an asshole, you know that?
Hi.... its probably in part ,his crap vrabel hurdy gurdy.....I bought one of these gurdys and spent many luthier hours and many hundreds of pounds putting it right! I also think this captain hurdy is a rude arrogant twat....for calling you a asshole .....your only offering your honest opinion....after all and to some degree I agree with you !
Great Tutorial, Thank you!
Thank you. So far my biggest problems has been educating my fingers on where the keys are. Can only play amazing grace as of the moment and am working hard to increase what I can play.
It's not easy but I suggest looking the back of the keys. You can write the note name on tape there, if it makes it easier!
What's the yellow tape on there for?
There is a slight air leakage
that is not the melody of Drunken Sailor, go back and give that one another listen
Correct, this is the tutorial for the armenian folk song "Đruncěn SæilØr". They get often mixed up. You can listen to the original here: ruclips.net/video/dQw4w9WgXcQ/видео.html
@@CaptainGurdy ah yes, a deeply clever and layered joke. surely this will distract everyone from how you _royally_ fucked up the melody to a song designed to be easy to play and sing

Whats the difference between the 3 string crwth vs. the 6 string one?
A 6-string crwth has normally 3 choirs. Just like a 12 string guitar is pretty much like a 6 string guitar but with more presence.
I use all steel strings which are the most durable but for safety I tune my Hurdy Gurdy down a step so instead of G/C Tuning it's F/Bb Tuning which actually also allows me to play Great Highland Bagpipe music on Hurdy Gurdy.
this was used in spongebob wasn't it
Nah spongebob had accordion
I thought it was cool and was going to buy one until you said that. Way to discredit someone else doing something awesome and make it all childish and dumb.
@@MealaBeala what’s wrong with spongebob
yikes - idk if you even see the irony in that comment, but uh, it's a really childish one, so i mean - does it matter? TV series (whether for cartoons or not), have a musician or a band that play the theme. So if music is childish and dumb to you, then ig your comment makes sense. Also lots of intelligent adults enjoy things like animated shows, for a multitide of reasons. Maybe someone beat the child out of you somehow long ago though, idk. Kinda sad ngl@@MealaBeala

Obrigado e Bom Natal - Boas Festas
Old vid i know bout I had to comment, No, the gurdy is not easy but when you "get" a piece down you can hear the angels sing with you.
I can't tell what buttons your pressing
I know it's not easy on video. You can buy the book with tablatures though, they help a lot!
This is one of my favorite versions of this song honestly

Thank ye Capt’n!
Thank you. Needless to say, the Arabic scale is an absolute must for anyone who plays Arabic music. Without it, any Organ/Keyboard becomes almost useless for Arabic music. I always wanted to get the Imperial Intercontinental Organ but never was able to do so. I hope that VISCOUNT still have these great Organs. However, I noticed that the sounds here are very different from the Imperial version which was extremely popular in the Arab world during the late 70s and throughout the 80s before the introduction of KORG M1 and other keyboards at that time.
You are most endearing. Excellent content!
You da man!!!! thanks so much for teaching songs on anglo concertina, they are hard to find tutorials because so many different kinds of concertinas!

Hey, isn't the book "Pirate songs for concertina" made for 30 buttons concertina ? How did you manage to play some of the songs ?
Many of the songs are fine with just a 20 buttons. On each song, a small diagram will show what buttons are necessary.
